Cowboy Christmas: Las Vegas

Missy Gresen

Kathy loves creating.  Over the last few months, friends of Kathy could tell you that trips to see her for a visit would usually be accompanied by a stop to her workshop where she wold catch up with you about life as she toiled away to create a combination of her custom dog bowls, wrist cuffs, bootlets, leads and dog collars to the tune of around 700 pieces.  Why all the dedication to creating these pieces in a short period of time?

This summer Kathy applied to be part of a huge gift show.  But not just any gift show.  A gift show, that in the Western world, is highly anticipated and in 2012 was attended by over 186,000 people over 10 days in downtown Las Vegas - the Cowboy Christmas Gift Show. And Kathy is no stranger to the wild world of Las Vegas and has known about this event since starting Boom Dog Creations.

“Before moving to Park City, my husband and I called Las Vegas our home.  Brad previously was an executive with a gaming company in Vegas and I taught special needs kids in the Las Vegas school district.  Vegas is part of our history and since starting Boom Dog Creations, I have had my eye on Cowboy Christmas Gift Show as I KNEW it would be the perfect place to expose others to my creations.  I have always wanted to go.” Kathy proudly exclaimed.

The Cowboy Christmas Gift Show is the longest running and only “original” gift show of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.  This ten day, western-themed gift show experience provides attendees access to over 400 plus vendors from across the United States and Canada.  Vendors and artists get to showcase their product and art in the Las Vegas Convention Center, just one block east of the famous Las Vegas Strip.  With over 300,000 square feet of show floor, artists and businesses like Boom Dog Creations, get exposure to thousands upon thousands of people on a daily basis.  The show includes vendors with customized jewelry, western wear, boots, spurs, furniture, original art, handmade crafts, pottery and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo event merchandise.

“In just one day last year at Cowboy Christmas, over 31,000 people roamed the gift show floor.  Who would not be excited about the prospect of being able to show work they are proud of to that many people,” Kathy says as she puts the final touch on one of her custom vintage leather wrist cuff.  “I am beyond elated about being part of this year’s Cowboy Christmas and I have been working hard to create some of my best pieces to have on hand.  Plus I will be bringing my work bench and will be able to do some custom pieces right on the spot!”

So if you happen to be in Vegas or you have friends in the Vegas area and they are looking to score some of Kathy’s amazing custom dog bowls, dog collars, wrist cuffs, leads and/or bootlets, send them on over to the Boom Dog Creations booth (#977) at the Las Vegas Convention Center North Hall.  Kathy would love to see you and try to find the perfect vintage accessory for you or your pup!  Admission is free and open to the public.

In addition to the shopping, fans will find a variety of entertainment. Just a stone throw away from Cowboy Christmas, Cowboy FanFest added 100,000 square feet of the best of the Western lifestyle, giving fans a chance to enjoy the best that rodeo has to offer.  Cowboy FanFest featured live concerts at the Rodeo Live/ACM Concert Stage, demonstrations, clinics and mutton bustin’ in the Rodeo Arena, exhibits in Rodeo Way, fan interactive booths and much more. Cowboy Christmas and FanFest run concurrently with the Wrangler NFR.

How Boom Dog Creations Began

Terra Reilly

A couple years ago The Pederson's lives changed in an instant. One day on the ski hill in Park City, Utah Kathy's husband Brad had a terrible accident. The doctors spelled doom and gloom for Brad but he and Kathy refused to accept the negative prognosis.

Kathy spent much of her career as a therapist working with people with traumatic brain injuries so in typical Kathy style she got to work helping the love of her life recover. They moved their permanent home from Las Vegas, Nevada Park City, Utah and Brad began to improve bit by bit, day by day.

Brad is focused and to be honest, a bit stubborn. He was determined to get healthy and back to work.  His recovery was so miraculous that Kathy had free time on her hands. Kathy has boundless energy. She loves to work with her hands and is always tinkering or improving something. So naturally she found something to do that not only gives focus for her creativity and energetic spirit but that also brings joy to the people around her.

A few pieces of Western leather in their closet, some silver conchos she had laying around and a visit to the leather crafting store for tools, in no time Kathy had created a collar for Boomer and begun the next chapter in her amazing life.

Years later Brad has had an miraculous recovery and is back to work, Kathy works every day in her shop, faithful Boomer and Roxy by her side, waiting for her to finish her last piece of the day so they can go for a walk around Park City.
